Voters elect a Mayor and six Council Members at large. The Mayor has a four-year term, while Council has staggered three-year terms. Ocean Gate Borough holds partisan elections. Reorganization of the Governing Body occurs in the first week of January.
The Mayor is the head of our municipal government. The Mayor sees that state laws and borough ordinances are faithfully executed and presides over Council. The Mayor only votes in the event of a tie, and has the authority to veto legislation, which is then subject to override by ⅔ majority of Council. The Mayor appoints Officers of the Government with Council approval.
The Ocean Gate Borough Council is the legislative body of the municipality. Council has the ability to override a Mayoral veto by ⅔ majority of all members. The Council also confirms appointments made by the Mayor. The Council gains appointment power upon failure to confirm the Mayor’s appointee or after an office has been vacant for 30 days. The Council holds all executive responsibility that is not specifically placed in the office of the Mayor.
The Mayor is the head of municipal government and sees that states laws and Borough ordinances are faithfully executed. The Borough Council has all executive responsibility not placed in office of mayor. Council may delegate, by ordinance, all or a portion of executive responsibility to an administrator as well as adopt an administrative code.
